Question What do you guys think of movies from the net?

I'm talking about both the legal and illegal ones (from P2P apps). What do you think of the practice and the morals? The workload in finding and downloading them? The quality of the rips? I've done it a few times and I ain't happy. They eat up MBs big time, the quality is dodgy, and you often don't get what the title says.

Well, firstly, I don't download movies from the net. This is due to a couple of reasons, which I will summarize below:

    - Speed: I got a 56k modem, to download a DivX movie, it would take me a few days being on-line non-stop. Even with kazaa, where you can pause your download, I would get impatient and probably go to the cinema to see it by the time it gets to 20%.

    - Quality: I can't stand the quality of most DivX movies. It's good to see that they've reduced it to about 600MB, but I'd rather pay $12 (AU) to watch it at the cinemas, or $6 (AU) to rent it from a video store.

Even if I had broadband (which I am getting soon...fingers crossed), I really doubt that I will be downloading movies from P2P programs. This is mainly due to the quality. As I said, I'd rather pay a little bit of money to see it full-quality. It makes the movie more enjoyable for me.

The workload in finding and downloading them?
Workload? I don't thing there is any. With so many P2P programs out there, the movies are easier to get a hold of then errors on a MS program (well, maybe not). My mate has a few folders full of DivX movies on CD's. Each CD holds one movie. He has about 3 folders. Each folder contains 74 slots for a CD. He's only had cable for a year or so...you make the calculations.

the quality does vary from movie to movie....when someone rips it, it is almost DVD quality, and then they degrade the quality to decrease the size......I have found some really good ones such as Jay Silent Bob Strike Back

“No, not anything. They name a lot of cars or clothes or swimming pools mostly and say how swell! But they all say the same things and nobody says anything different from anyone else. And most of the time in the cafes they have the joke-boxes on and the same jokes most of the time, or the musical wall lit and all the colored patterns running up and down, but it’s only color and all abstract. And at the museums, have you ever been? All abstract. That\'s all there is now...\"

Indeed. You'll probably find action movies will have the lowest quality due to the picture always changing and the background not staying similar too often. The less movement in the picture, the better it can be compressed.

I don't watch movies off the net for 2 reasons
    1. I have 56k
    2. I hate watching movies on a computer screen
Its not software piracy. I’m just making multiple off site backups.

me too. As the other guys said, the quality is bad, it will take me a few days to download them, no one knows if the guy who gives me the movie, leave and stop connect on net, no one tell me if the file is okay or its a porn video.

I myself don't normally download full movies, I only download small things, such as Invader Zim episodes that I liked and wouldn't mind watching agin... I was thinking of downloading Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but then again, I liked that movie so much, I will just buy and save downloading time.
