Advices for problems on Windows XP (Part 1st)

With the help of my friends and many sites, i decided to make a thread which have solutions for problems on M$ problems.

Problems:

• Data loss while using compressed folders, bigger than 4GB.
• Weakness on gaining the acsess of a Home Network.
• Claim more free space on HDD from the Windows Setup.
• The PC delay when the user choose many icons.
• Ability record only on the first CD-R/W drive of a PC.

Solutions:

• Data loss while using compressed folders, bigger than 4GB.
  
  When there're using compressed folders, their size should be limited on 4GB, as in this situation the file zip which has the compressed folder, could not be opened, without any warning
  The only solution in this problem is to be careful the user to not create compressed folders with the size bigger of 4GB
  
  
• Weakness on gaining the access of a Home Network.
  
  When the user try to gain the access of the Home Network, either via a program, either via the icon "Mu Network Places", the computer can start to delay very much or to show an error message "Program is not Responding". This problem can happened when the installed version 3.x of the antivirus program Kaspersky Anti Virus (ÊÁV). The user who are intrested in this can either to deactivate the program either to update their program on the 4.0 version
  
  
• Claim more free space on HDD from the Windows Setup.
  
  While the install of Windows XP, when the PC has started from a disket, it's possible to show the following message of wrong:
  Windows XP requires a hard drive volume with at least 318 megabytes
  (333926400 byes) of free disk space. Setup will use this space for storing
  temporary files during installation. The drive must be on a permanently
  attached local hard disk supported by Windows XP, and must not be a
  compressed drive.
  
  Setup was unable to locate a drive with the required amount of free space.
  
  Setup cannot continue. Press ENTER to exit.
  
  This message appears when the system partition (the drive C has less than 8MB free (Microsoft suggest 20MB). This store place is nessesary for placing the files which are on the directory %WIN_NT%.~BT which is creating while the Windows' install.
  To fix the problem, the user should either to uninstall some programmes, either to delete or transform some files to other partitions.
  
  
  
• The PC delay when the user choose many icons.
  
  
  When the user choose many icons, by drag them with the mouse, it's possible to be presented big delays or the PC to present problematic behaviour. The reasons for this problem could be the operation alpha blending, by which is able the appearence of the choosed icons as semi-visible.
  To deactivate this, the user, should make a right click on the icon "My Computer" and to choose "Properties". Then he/she choose in tab Advanced the place Performance and from there he do click on Setting. Finally, on tab "Visual Effects", deactivates the action "SHow translucent selection rectangle".
  
  
• Ability record only on the first CD-R/W drive of a PC.
  
  
  When a PC has more than one CD-R/W drives, then only one from these is recognised as Writter from Windows XP. If a user choose "Enable CD Recording on this drive" in one from the other drives then, as the writter seem to work, in fact the ability of recording stays deactivated. This problem is because of the event thatWindows XP has the solution of this problem, the user should change the place of the drive in the level of hardware.

What about the fact that I can't get my Win XP box to logon to my Linux box running Samba, yet every other OS hasn't had a problem (95, 98, ME, 2kPRo, NT, Linux)?

if it is it's cause you can't

As for Windows XP......ditto, I do not plan on buying it or using it at all. However, one piece of advice.....if you have bought Windows XP home edition, it will not support domain logons. You will need to upgrade to the Pro version.

Hummm, thanks zigar. I had a feeling something like that was gonna come up. "not support domain logons" It logs onto my winNT domain/workgroup, but I just can't get it to log on to Samba. It isn't even a Samba PDC or anything, just a file server basically. Anyway, I am sure that is all the same problem. Obviously I am talking XP HOME, so....thanks.

I have had trouble with my windows xp home edition and the ability to get netbios information....nbtstat is listed as an available feature in windows xp, but it simply doesn't seem to work with xp home....is this what is being refered to as domain logons in the above posts?

Hey pull up command prompt.
Type nbtstat/? and that will give you needed help.

That is the problem Avid.
If I pull up command and run a nbtstat it returns "Host not found"
A friend and I were both trying to get netbios info on the same host, he was running windows ME, I have XP home-he got results, I got "Host not found"

The diffrences with XP home and Pro are huge, like SMP support, dual screens and also networking. Home can not login to a domain either.

I patched my samba to the newest version and tweaked it like recommended to run with Windows XP and had no problems. No my Samba server is not a PDC. Souleman I would be happy to help you with this, if you need help you know you can find me in the chat.
