    Where exactly do the hashes come from? What file?

    There in the SAM files
    try systemroot%\system32\config

    Hmmm... I have a program that pulls the hashes and have read that if you rename the SAM file in the folder it resets the password however I am not sure of it...exactly proper way to do it. I have a linux disc that gets to the VMlinuz.gz loading and then it says Failed to boot...ant thoughts?
