How Personal Is Your Computer?
Im just wondering... how many of you out there take your computer as a "someone" instead of a "something"? or maybe in the middle..
As for me.. well. first of all.. let me introduce you all to Jenny.. my FIRST computer.. a comaq presario.. 500Mhz P3, 96MB RAM, 12GB HDD with onboard Video and Sound card and internal 56K Modem.. sure she's something u would find in an ordniary shop.. thats how she came to me at first.. i swear i was soooo excited.. technically.. Jenny isnt mine.. she's my dad's computer but I am the one who put the hard work on her.. fixed her when something goes wrong (even stay up all night doing repairs).. give her everything she needs and even things she doesnt really need.
For more than 2 years.. ive been slaving over this box... and its been like a part of me already.. recently.. 3 weeks ago.. the monitor's power supply went dead.. and i had to turn the monitor in to the technicians for the repairs.. 3 weeks.. no Jenny.. it was like hell for me.. as if everything changed..
And dont take me wrong, i do have i life.. and a girlfriend (angelic_ky) :P
everyday i work on my assessments with Jenny and talk with angelic_ky on the phone during my breaks.. weekends and wednesdays im at angelic_ky's place or we go out somewhere.. i even took her out for lunch recently on a Saturday. but yeah.. 75% of my time is spent on this box... games.. works.. repairs.. upgrades.. Ive seen other boxes.. way faster and has way more memory than Jenny has.. but still doesnt feel thesame.. i feel more comfortable using Jenny than ANY other box..
and oh btw, my monitor is still not fixed.. the shop gave me a temporary replacement. some how its been 3 weeks now and they keep telling me the parts they ordered havent arrived yet. i mean.. WHERE ARE THEY ORDERING THESE PARTS FROM?? MARS???!
anyway.. so to u out there.. tell me your story.

OK, my first computer was a VIC-20. For those of you who don't know, the 20 stood for 20K of RAM. I played games written in BASIC loaded from a tape drive (a floppy disk was space-age technology to me) which took 10 minutes to find, and another 20 minutes to load. Some games I could even plug in to the back of the keyboard (which also happened to be the CPU...), just like Nintendo games now. This computer had absolutely no useful purpose and had been broken for 5 years when my mother threw it out at the age of 16. I cried.
Yes, I name my computers. This post is being typed on Suzanne. Suzanne acts as a server for Ashley and Platypus (I didn't think of that one...). My computer, in its own voice, welcomes me to it every day. Although I must admit, I have a much stronger bond with my car... she even bitches at me when she doesn't want to start in the morning.

"Computer Virus Detected!" when my AV picks up something.. etc etc bla bla bla

YOU guys crack me up. Well here goes nothing. No I dont name my systems but I do have a slight bond.
My first system I still remember the configuration. 300Mhz PII, 64Mb ram, 8.4Gb Hd, 8MB Intel Vid Card, 56 Lucent WinModem, Windows 98. When I first got it, like most people out there I was clueless about the true power of PC's, mostly I played games. Nevertheless, after a few month little by little I was being sucked into the world of computer addiction, world of neverending nights in front of a pc, fighting off script kiddies and .....
I no longer have the system, it served me for 3years, and went through so much **** I was surprised it still worked when I sold it. Now I have 3 systems. My main system overclocked AMD XP 1600+ ( running at 1800+ speed). 256ddr ram 60gb hd ide, 9.1gb scsi and couple other neat devices. 2nd machine is stripped and tweaked dell system, and 3rd is my *nix baby, 233Mhz w/ 256mb ram. I also have a 4th system on stand by to be built. Overclocked 750 duron (@ 825Mhz) 512Mb ram Asus Mobo good stuff. Maybe I will name my main system I dunno but I dont get too personal. I tend to yell at my systems, cause a lot of times I overload them and it freezes for a couple of seconds so i get mad.. u get the point. But nevertheless I love my babies. Of course pc's cant replace a girlfriend and no I dont spend more time with my systems then I do with my girl.

Yup I do feel the same way as u feel sonic. My comp is 650Mhz, 128 RAM with built in sound card and and graphic. And yes, when I'm not with my box for a day, I feel my life so dull. Needless to say I spend minimum 5 hours when I'm awake. And of course I had doing everything I can to fulfill my box wished and she never wished.lol. But yes Comp is everything for me. I believe all of AO member addict to comp. Am I??

My first was a Commodore 64. I got it before I could even read, so all I did was play games for years.. then in the 4th grade, I took a class on BASIC and I haven't been heard from since. Since then I've had a 75mhz pentium, 200 mhz pentium 2, 550 Mhz k6 2, and finally a Duron 950. I dont really have a bond with any of my computers. I am a hardware guy, so hardware comes and goes. I have more of a bond with the things I make, Artwork, programs, movies, game models/skins/modifications. I have a paranoid thing about losing data, I keep a backup harddrive which, once a month, I hook up to my computer and transfer data for backup. that way, I never lose more than a month's worth of data.

Yes, I name my computers, primarily because they are on a network. However, I name them after my real pets. This only refers to my home systems because my work system is for work, isn't mine and therefore doesn't deserve that type of affection. We have a working relationship.
My computer is Whitney (named for my precious Buff Cocker Spaniel who died of cancer) and is a P-IV 1.5 GHz, 512 Meg RDRAM (800), Geforce 2 GTX 32 meg video (Geforce 3 ti 200 on the way), Creative Labs Audigy Pro sound card, two 40 GB HP EIDE Hard Drives (removeable for different OS's), DVD player. My wife's computer is Shasta (named for my loving Springer Spaniel) and is a P-III 800, 256 MB PC-133 RAM, ATI 7200 All-In-Wonder Video Card, Sound Blaster 16, 20 GB and 10 GB hard drives, DVD Player, and CD-RW.
The computers are networked together with Whitney controlling the two printers and Shasta controlling the CD-RW. They share a DSL connection which is connected through a Linksys DSL/Cable router and switch. In a reversal from real life Shasta plays almost no games while Whitney is my game machine and enjoys Counter Strike but mostly (addictively) Anarchy Online.
BTW My first computer was a 286 which I finally gave to my son after it had been repeatedly updated to a Pentium MMX 200 MHz. Three years after purchasing it I realized that when I replaced the floppy I had finally replaced the last piece of original hardware initially purchased. So that computer was never thrown away it was upgraded out of existence.

The first computer, or computers that i became attached to i named Jim, Bob and Carol. Jim and Bob are to p100's made by AST Bob has 32 Mb or RAM and Jim has 24Mb. Carol was my dad's work provided lap top (p133). We came in to there custody because AST were going to throw them out and replace them with p300's i think. So my dad said how about 50 for each of them.
When we got them back i formatted Bob and spent a whole weekend getting it to work properly (AST had put too much inside and there were conflicts everywhere) Jim i didn't format, but spent a while sorting him out, and Carol i sorted out at a later date. The main things that these three are used for now is networking old games like doom 2 via a litlle 8 port hub.
I now have Max, he is an athlon 900 256 Mb of RAM, an old GeForce 2 graphics card and Soundblaster live card with 5.1 surround sound. I have formatted him to or three times in the 2 years that i have had him and once he was even inconsiderate enough to blow his motherboard but fortunately the warranty covered it. I plan to do a respray on him soon and to cut some holes in the side casing and cover it with wire mesh so that he looks really mean.
For the future i plan to network them all together. Also my dad has just bought himself a new computer off e-bay that is in the 1Gig reigon somewhere, so i can't wait to get back home from uni to check it out.
The funny thing is that even though a lot of them have blokes names, i always call them good or bad girls...
