they buy lists from scrounges who collect them using bots to scan web pages or extract them from email 'warnings' or 'heart wrenching pleas'you know fwd, fwd, fwd, fwd...send this to everyone you know. commercial sites that people give info too, compile lists to sell and some viruses are made just to send email addresses 'home'

its not just aol'ers they spam but everyone, it looks that way on the receiving end because each message is bcc'ed to 20 or so addresses in the same network.

any email server can be used for this, but it dosn't take to long for networks to 'black-hole' or not allow any mail from that address/addresses so they search for other peoples mail servers that will allow open smtp relay (no logon). they route their mail threw them, usually 100,000 to 500,000 at a clip. until that server is black-holed then point their garbage to a new server, leaving the last unsuspecting chump pretty well screwed.

I don't know, haven't really received any scams like that, I'm constantly getting spammed by AOL members with porn links and whatnot. The thing is that the e-mails don't start from them until you post a member profile. My other account doesn't have a profile, and alas, no AOL spam.

i spam AOL and ICQ using programs i made for AOL and for ICQ only. extracts member names created and member UINs. after that i use a winsock mailer and an smtp server. how simply is that? i havent spammed in well over 1year but back then it was easy. now its CGI spamming which uses Matts FormMail.Cgi, most companies have fixed the bug(exploit) in it and its becoming harder to find free formmails. but where theres a will theres a way. keep an open mind.
