Can somebody please tell me why would a real hacker be interested in hacking the average home computer?
How would they find your specific computer amid all the millions
of computers on the net?
I am realy interested to know this has been bothering me for some time

For practice, to learn and to have bragging rights.

I don't agree with it and this is why even the average home user needs to firewall themselves. If they leave themselves open in any way and their ip pops up as happy hunting grounds during some kiddies port scan of a range of ip's, guess who's going to be targeted?

what TC said plus the fact that joe average has bank accounts and credit card info on their pc...their identities can be stolen....their pc can be zombified to be used in an attack against some joe unaverage, their pc can be used to hide and or relay illegal files, information, pornography....pretty much whatever they want...and that's really the point...it's a power trip at the very least....

The real question is why wouldn't hackers be interested in hacking home computers?

1.) It's easy. Security on the average home user's box is usually poor to non-existent.

2.) Bandwidth. There are more and more home users who are signing up to cable and *DSL.

3.) Resources. Hackers can run their cracking programs in the background on another box.

4.) Anonymity. You can hack a home user's box and then leapfrog to other boxes from there.

5.) Practice. Most home user's don't use logging. Hackers can hack away for as long as they like uninterrupted.

6.) Curiosity. Hackers are naturally curious. They want to know everything that they don't know.

7.) They might feel like being destructive. Some people are just twisted.

8.) They might want to steal personal information (eg. CC's #'s)
