I find it very worrying that in a least 5 different countries including mine (UK), that a lot I.T. teachers at schools and collages having basically no knowledge of computing and even new starters know more them , and in my opinion they shouldn't hold there jobs.

High Lights – of few problem areas

1st High School in 1991-1995 – Print Server was in class room any student could mess with it Students had access to the systems when no teachers were about

2nd High School in 1995 – 1996 – Stupid Cumbrian I.T. school teachers was so pleased with his crappy he quoted state of the art computer room. I told him with pleasure it was shite cos the machines weren’t networked and that to be state of the art he had to running Windows 95 not Windows 3.1 (you can guess I got banned for telling him the facts.)

College 1996 Teacher switched off power to whole of class we all lost our work, blamed us for not saving work, well that true but it not acceptable switching the power off. The so-called techy’s tried upgrading network and totally messed it up. People brought in hacking tools and never got caught. Internet access wasn’t restricted which was cool except someone got caught looking at Porn. but it was so easy to get the password due to tools on network

Sigh... I came here to read about VNC. What a disappointment.

Here's a link to VNC, avenger.....You probably already know this, just wanting to make certain.

A teacher in my school once threatened me because I was in the End Task menu (Ctrl. Alt. Delete) because Word had crashed on me and I was trying to save time (and potential hard disk corruption) by not having to press the reset button. Apparently, Ctrl. Alt. Delete is some kind of special administrative thing and only the technicians are trained in how to use it, and someone who isn't trained could damage the whole network from it. Yeah right!
(Once again dating myself a bit.. *sigh*)

Well, when I went to school (and I'm sure that the situation's only gotten worse since then), the computer instructors were the brightest, most ambitious instructors in the school... often the math or science instructors that were branching out and trying something new. Granted, back then we're talking 1MHz and (*gasp*) 2MHz PCs were brand-spankin-new... or so it seemed (no one had them). So, as it ended up, the instructors often didn't know much more about the machines that the curriculum they were paid to teach... anything outside of that was, well, verbotten (or this dreadful scary place that you weren't allowed to go). <edit>They were reading ahead of the class or thought to be "good enough to stay ahead of the student" even though they, themselves, didn't actually know the subject at hand... I think there's a couple of movies that elude to similiar practices around then.</edit>

So, myself... having already, several years previous, built a computer from nearly scratch (anyone here remember Heathkit?) and having actually managed to get the terminal interface working (yes - up until that point it was just a hex pad and a series of LEDs), you could say that I knew a little bit more than the average person/high-school kid or even instructor. (When we got the BASIC interpreter running on the thing, we were in business, let me tell you).

Myself, being completely bored in my AP Computer Class (ie. introduction to Pascal, 6502 Assembly, and a few other things) - I nearly got seriously busted in school for writing a computer program that would emulate the interface that students would see when the machine booted up. It would let you play and interact with the machine as you were supposed to... minus a couple "important" features. For the BASIC Programming class (which followed the AP class), certain important features like "run" and "save" and "load" were missing... though later versions would give smart-alec reponsives to things like "list" or "run" and the like. All in all, my friends and I at the time thought it was pretty funny... the instructor, on the other hand, was not impressed.
