All of this talk of the big schools for computer security is too much for an old man ... I just want to know if there are any courses offered online that are worth the price????

There are actually a TON of courses offered online that are worth the cost: they're free. Just search around google and you can find plenty, and I know of a few sites that have little teaching sessions every week on IRC to help people out on different sessions. Trust me, you can learn all you need to learn without spending anything at all. Just takes a little time and patience.
