You forgot PC Chillen http://www.antivirus.com. Kaspersky's scanner is excellent. It was the first AV scanner to be able to get rid of memory resident viruses without booting from a floppy diskette.

Hi there - I'm fairly new to the IS field - can anyone recomend a AV that is FULLY compatible with WinXP? I've dumped Mc due to issues that it throws. Commercial AV would be OK, but would prefer a freebie.
Thanks!

Okybugs-- I have seen two different corporate antivirus schemes put to use that I have liked, Norton Corp AV which seems to always be the first company to find a solution and fix for the latest bugs
OR Sophos seems to be a good one at another company I have worked for. Either way I recommend if you want good protection there are a series of things you need to look into.
Protect the systems, Protect EMAIL we use Antigen as the First tier of protection for email followed by a program by broadware (I think is their name) It does a deep scan and allows more detailed blocking of extensions and spam mail. Both Sophos and Norton or XP compatible and I like the layout of Norton.

OkyBugs...a couple have already been mentioned. AVG from http://www.grisoft.com is very good, although it hasn't done well in the latest virus tests (which I take with a grain of salt, anyway) and AVAST32 http://www.avast.com
Or, you can surf over to http://www.webattack.com/freeware/freeware.html and check out the offerings. There are several freeware versions there.
I use Kaspersky, which isn't free, and is good. But, the thing mentioned about their server being hacked gives me some concern. I was one of the many folks whose email addy was used to ship virused email around.

I think it happens more often then we think. This incident just slipped out. Eugene Kaspersky is a legend in the antivirus community. You do pay a little more for his product but its worth it.

I used to be heavy into virus collecting( and NO I never EVER misused any specimin from my zoo) and I must say in the viral underground there were only 2 products that garnered any kind of respect: Kapersky's AVP and F-Prot from Frisk software. When trading virii, AVP logs and F-Prot logs are the standard way to verify the file's identity. Pretty good endorsement I think. Incidentally both companies make Linux virus scanners, too.
