Big Brother?
Tony Blair has revealed plans to supply every british citizen with ID cards (possibly by the end of the year). These cards have in-built microchips that are linked to some central database that contains personal and somewhat private information such as medical details, driving license details, bank details etc..... Not too sure what the affect will be, suppose it will help with the asylum seekers problem but surely its an intrusion of privacy? What are your opinions?

well what bothers me is that ill get harassed by the cops just cause im an american living in scotland and wont be issued a card till i get citizenship.......... grrrrrrr. i think that one centralised card with all your info on it is a great idea, add to it a fingerprint signature (by laser reading, not ink) and i think that would be good, but it needs to be inplemented in a much wider range than just UK citizens, like mabee us foreigners living here on a long term basis....... that might be alittle better

that i idea has been floating around forever....personally i htink it is completely invasion of privacy... lots of othersthink of it as a must for the years to come cuz of the terrorist acts and so on. i think that terroists can fake those as they can passports.

I don't think its right to make people carry around a card to prove they are who they say they are. Plus tons of things could happen to it, and then how long would it take to get a new one? And in how much trouble would you get for forgetting to bring your card? I think the ideas is a total invasion of privacy as well, this isn't a good idea.

Honestly I don't really mind. I mean most americans have (or will have) a drivers license in their wallets, and thats just about the same thing. You have to have that with you at all times, so why not a national id card. It could prolly incorporate your drivers license on it as well. I think its inevitable that it will come to pass. Don't think of it as big brother keeping tabs on you, instead think of it as kepping tabs on other not so nice people.

I agree with xmaddness, all Americans have an SS# and most have a driver's license, what's the difference between the card with the chip and our SS# and driver's licenses. NOTHING! And as for making fake cards with chips, that might be a little bit harder than faking a passport, emrys. I doubt that the government would be selling these chips to people if they were used in a national I.D card.
This card wouldn't make a difference in the beginning but overtime it would prove it's worthy. I support this and I think Bush or a future president should try to pass an amendment requiring U.S citizens to carry one at all times.

If all it does is just store information, what's wrong with that? the information is out there already anyway and if someone really wanted it they could get it. The only way that would bug me is if they had little transmitters so they can know where you are, but if they did that you can be sure people would find a way to jam it anyway.

I've long been an advocate of this. Many of us have passports, and as xmadness said, most have drivers licenses, and all americans have social security cards.
It's just a pain in the ass to have all those ID's when one card would do the trick. Plus, it would be a decent way to curb identity fraud, especially when people write out bad checks. I don't even remember the last time anyone asked to see ID when writing one. It's scary, but anyone could steal my checkbook and go running rampant.
I'm not worried about big brother spying on me. You already know they do, what's just one more thing they do? I don't mind if they read my email, because I don't say anything I don't want other people to know anyways. Hell, I don't care if they know what porn sites I go to. I don't do anything too illegal, hehehe...

won the war after all.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.
