Spywares are programs wich send informations about you to in order to make better adverts.
They are generally installed with others "free" software like Kazaa or Bearshare.

You can block them with a firewall but the best solution is to delete them with ad-aware http://www.lavasoft.de
Life is boring. Play NetHack... --more--

Adwares are "extras" to programs you download, like Kisscool said, such as KaZaA, Winamp...

The programs will analyse several things to better determine what kind of "customer" you are.

It'll either scan your cookies and determine what ads you see on a usual basis (ie: gaming, porn, software, movies...)

Or it'll scan your registry and FAT to determine your programs that you are running to "better understand the client"... (what BS)

They compile a data analysis of the results into a packet and send it to a recieving computer the next time you surf the net.

The "host" computer recieves their info, analyse it and then work from that info to better annoy you.

    That's one type of spyware...

There's also WinXP's spyware to determine wether your software is pirated or not...
There's also Trojans that log certain things and send it off (ie: passwords, key loggers, files)

    What is Spyware?

Spyware is ANY SOFTWARE which employs a user's Internet connection in the background (the so-called "backchannel") without their knowledge or explicit permission.

Silent background use of an Internet "backchannel" connection MUST BE PRECEDED by a complete and truthful disclosure of proposed backchannel usage, followed by the receipt of explicit, informed, consent for such use.

ANY SOFTWARE communicating across the Internet absent these elements is guilty of information theft and is properly and rightfully termed: Spyware.
Download the program that KissCool suggested... Ad-Aware

Ad-Aware is a good program, also available is PestPatroll at http://www.sunbelt-software.com

You also asked if someone can tell you of some programs that have it so check out http://antispyware.bizland.com/list.zip it is a zip file containing lists of difernt software that comes with spyware.

And finaly, how does spyware work can be found at:

    http://www.monitoring-spy-software.com/why.htm
    http://ecommerce.ncsu.edu/csc413/student-work/ spyware/spyware.ppt

The first link is spasific to one particular spyware program, the second is a site that talks about how spyware works in general and also tells you what it is. I did not visit the last two links as I don't have time, I simply searched for them, read the discription then copy and pasted the address. So they may be broken links I do not know. Anyway I found them bu typeing the following in the google search box:

    "how does spyware work"

with the quotes tells google to find pages with those words side by side instead of scatered. Hint!

In snatches, they learn something of the wisdom
which is of good, and more of the mere knowledge which is of evil. But must I know what must not come, for I shale become those of knowledgedome. Peace~

the Bonzi Buddy is also a very popular Spyware software. Along with Kazaa, not to sure about morpheus or iMesh.

Adwares are "extras" to programs you download, like Kisscool said, such as KaZaA, Winamp...
Winamp? That one's new to me. Nice to know though.
