Thread: The new 200 gig h/d has arrived!

  1. #21
I know HOW to build a computer, and I use a grounding wire to get rid of static, but I'm still a little nervous, 'cause, well, it will be expensive, and I don't want to ruin the hardware.

khakis, if you've got the knowledge to try and not touch the circuitry and not use a magnitized screwdriver, you're set. Don't worry about not being able to figure it out, if you don't think you'll get it right the first time, go get a 486 and test your skills on that until you're confident you can do it on a nice machine, that way if you do by chance fudge up it wont be a costly mistake(maybe 30$?).

As for you people looking to buy the 'drivezilla', either you have WAY too much porn, mp3's and movies or you've got a few too many programs that are probably rarely if ever used. I've *only* got a 120 and im only about a 3rd of the way through it, I don't think I'll be needing any more storage space for oh, maybe 6 months and by that time the drivezilla should be down around 250$ or 300$ and maybe be a little bit faster.
I did not come here to tell you how it is going to end, I came here to tell you how it was going to begin. I\'m going to hang up this phone, then I\'m going to tell these people what you don\'t want them to hear.

khakisrule there is nothing to be afraid off. Just take care when you are building your new computer and you will be ok.

Somethings may not work at first but just check your connections and handle everything with care and everything will be alright.

Like avdven and others have mentioned, I believe that two 100/120 gigs hard drives is the way to go. That new 200 gigs drive wouldn't be out for the next couple of months and it is running way slow. Besides, if you are going to be hostiing a site and your hard drive is going to be used for uploads and downloads you will need quick access. Also with the two drives you will have the same space but more speed and the two drive combination is easy to set up. In any case, maxtor drives comes with software to help you connect two drives. All you have to worry about is the jumper settings.

Good luck building your computer and as qwerty_smith said, "most importantly, have fun".

I have to agree with you there avdven, we want speed in todays world. we don't need these oversized drives that are going to run fairly slow anyway. If they were more speedy I would be the first one on the bus to get one or two....etc. It is still nice to see though that we are finally starting to get somewhere with HD's...about #$# time, lol. I'm sure within a couple years we will be all peachy with really large and fast drives that everyone can afford, cause not maybe ppl are going to run out and spend $400 on a HD.

nononono, I do know that 2 drives with small sizes are faster than one big drive, in fact I reccomended that exact thing to JChostingadmin when he was asking about his hosting company. I looked over the specs and know that these new drives will be slow, after all, they don't even have an 8 meg cache, and the RPM is the same as the 120, I just wanted to know if people had any opinions or reviews about the new drives.

Khakisrule, there won't be any reviews because (as far as I know) the drives haven't hit the shelves yet. As for opinions, I think it's pretty fair to say that most people agree that these drives don't really have much point because, although they do hold a great deal of data, they will be extremely slow accessing said data. Furthermore, can you honestly say you'll use 200 GB of information? Granted my servers (and one workstation) have insane amounts of hard disk space, but that's because I need the space. I run a business and I have a great deal of data, most of which requires redundancy in case anything were to happen. Even if you plan to install 10 different OSes (though you only mentioned 4), 120 GB should be more than enough space. As I stated above, Linux generally doesn't require that much space. Even if you run Windows XP, I can't imagine that you'd need anything over 20 GB... anything over that's just overkill. The machine I'm currently using has an 18 GB hard drive for Windows XP and all of my programs, and even with the amount of programs I have installed, I am still only using 60% of the drive... before you go out and spend a fortune on a top-of-the-line 200 GB hard drive, I think you need to sort out exactly what you're requirements are (in speed as well as size) and purchase accordingly. It's not going to do you any good to break-the-bank by spending $400+ on a new drive, meaning you'll have to skimp on something else (for instance a slower processor, less RAM, less efficient video card, etc.) Just my opinion...

Lol, adven, I guess you didn't realize why I was looking at the xtra space. Let me say, I was never going to get them, they only have a 2 meg cache, and 7200 rpms, not worth it. I just wanted to see people's opinions. I was going to get a 120gig SE drive, nothing more than that.

    Ground wrist strap
Uh oh, i think I just found out why my new 128 meg RAM card blew.....because I've been using both (well, I've been using a magnitized screwdriver, but never a ground wrist strap)....btw how much is a ground wrist strap in the stores?
