As you can tell from the other posts here, the general definition of a "Hacker" is based on the opinions of the person you ask. That said, here is my opinion:

A hacker is no different than an adventurer or explorer. Curious about their surroundings, they venture forth to gain any and all knowledge possible about the world they exist in. This means facing many dangers with the local inhabitants and passing many obstacles in their paths. What is done with knowledge makes no difference for each has their own purpose for quenching their curiosity. The "good" or the "bad" that can come from this knowledge is also an opinionated subject as everyone has a different "definition" of what good and bad are. As for me, I adventure out now and then and the information I gather I use to further my career and to help others out when they are stuck. Sure, I have my days where I can be turned to the dark side but not very often.

As for what others think of me or any other person, who cares! The only opinion that matters is the opinion you have of your self!

I've notice many similarities between the words "Witch" and "Hacker" Both have gotten bad/misleading reps from media and movies (Hackers, The Craft, etc). You can't call yourself either in public with out attracting bad attention and comments. They both are selective in nature, as to truely call onself a witch or wiccan, you have to study the craft for a year and a day, and the same is kinda true of hacking, you cant pick up a computer for the first time, and in a year be some uberhacker, you have to put time and effort into it. Also Hackers and Wiccans both go by a sort of code of "as long as it dosent harm anyone(or computer) its relatively okay" Of course that dosen't apply to crackers and script kiddies.

Just my input and observations about two somewhat similar groups.

A hacker IMHO, is someone who has a deep desire to learn more of what is expected to learn. They expand they're knowledge of technology beyond the average limit. To learn new ways on how to operate; to learn; to write; to develope. To give themselves a full and expert knowledge of what they want to learn about. Contrary to popular belief and by the eyes of media, a hacker is not someone who presses buttons really really fast and in a few seconds has access to any computer they want. *Movies* :-/

Hackers are horny geeks that learn about computers and other electronic technology only to find more ways to get to their hardcore porn.

A hacker, deeply interested in a system, computer or non-computer, learns as much as possible about the system. His or her goal is educational with, occasionaly, some thought to making the system better. The application of said knowledge has taken on a negative aspect regardless of the effects.

Hrm, when I hear hacker the first thing I think of are the lil punk script kiddies that come into irc. They are the ones that loudly exclaim 'I am a hacker, fear me' (tho they do not put it so eloquently).

It's not just the media that gives 'hacker' a bad meaning....it's 70% of the people who call themselves hackers as well.

I hear so many people trying to save the term 'hacker' and make it look like one of the good guys again.....tho I fear it is too late and a lost cause. Find a new term, make it all neat and shiny, and call yourself that.
