with all the broadband users nowadays phreaking is a bit outdated.

Mobile phreaking will propably catch on soon..
But the normal "old fashioned" phreaking is not-done anymore..
A lot of the information you find is outdated, but phreaking in and of itself is still widely done. It has gone back underground for the most part, where it started. Mobil phreaking started catching on almost 7 years ago, when the price of mobil phone service was extreamly high. "Old fashioned" phreaking is still around also, but a lot less common. Mostly in areas that have older phone systems, but not always. Look at Las Vegas. I can't remember the link anymore, but an "escort service" just sued Sprint (with Kevin Mitnicks help) reguarding someone taking over the phone system and redirecting many of their phone calls either to busy signals or competitors phones.

I'm not sure what boxes work and what boxes don't, but the best way to find out is "trial and error".
But be very careful with what you try. In some areas, they have anti-phreak systems in place. If a the CO recieves a 2600 tone (for example), they will dispatch security to wherever the signal came from. In some area's, its even like a honeypot, where they will let you connect, just to keep you on the phone long enough to get a cop there.

The links that RA gave are probably your best source of information. unless you can find real underground sites....

Since you brought up Phreaking, and I was interested in it forever, how could I learn more information on how PBX's work? Any good links you can suggest? Loved the article in 2600 about the phone system in Afghanistan. If you're interested in phreaking and haven't gotten a copy of the latest issue, you need to get one, lol! www.2600.com peace.

2600, now that's a number I haven't heard in a long time. ::reminiscess:: Back in the day of jr. high, my friends and I spent a lot of time playing with and screwing up our school's phone system. Ahh... those were the good old days...
