In its default setup, xine can't play DVDs because of the legal situation surrounding DVD encryption technology. You'll have to add a couple of things to xine in order to get it to play DVDs.

You'll need libdvdcss and libdvdread in order to play the DVDs, and you'll need xine-dvdnav to make the navigation menus work. Once you get all of that installed, you can press the "nav" button on xine, and then play normally. It should work then.

    hi....
I've already down loadedlibdvdcss and libdvdread..but still...can't play my dvd...this is what I've go(I've typed xine -VSHm in... DOS):

    "Found xine library version:0.9.8
Warning! Syncronized activated-this way to slow..
    Display is not using xinerama.
XF86VidMode Extension (2.1) detected ,try to use it.
    XF86VidMode Extension : 3 modelines found.
Load_plugins: failed to find Video output plugin <SHm>
    main:Video Driver <SHm> failed"

And then I tried to pressed"play" on XINE gui....and this is what I've got:

    XINE ENGINE ERROR
There is no available input plugin available to handle XINE version 0.9.8.

So if any one have same problem please let me knoww....

I'm not at my Linux machine right now, but a few quick things to check:

Does /dev/dvd exist? If not, create a link from the appropriate CD-ROM device to dvd:
    ln -s /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /dev/dvd

Did you compile libdvdcss, libdvdread, and xine-dvdnav with any options? Try this:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make
    make install

When I get to my Linux system I'll try to track down the error a little better, but if you continue having problems PM me and I'll throw Red Hat on a partition and walk you through the setup.

OK... I was going to PM this to you, but I decided somebody else may get some good out of it down the road, so I'm posting it for the AO archives. I threw Red Hat 7.3 onto a spare partition, and this is *exactly* what I did to get xine working. You must be root for all of this, BTW. You're about to get a crash course in compiling Linux software.

I tried a DVD with just the plain default configuration. I got the exact same error you did.

First, make a /dev/dvd device. Red Hat can't tell the difference between a CD-ROM and a DVD, so you have to create this device by hand. Your cdrom device may be different if you have more than one.
    ln -s /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd

The version of xine that comes with Red Hat is fairly old (0.9.8), so I downloaded the newest version (.0.9.13), along with all the DVD plugins that it needs.

    Download the following 6 files:
    http://xine.sourceforge.net/files/xi...-0.9.13.tar.gz
    http://xine.sourceforge.net/files/xine-ui-0.9.13.tar.gz
    http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan...s-1.2.2.tar.gz
    http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/d...d-0.9.3.tar.gz
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/d...use_mirror=unc
    http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/d...use_mirror=unc

Remove the old version of xine installed by Red Hat by typing "rpm -e xine" This ensures that there won't be conflicting versions of anything.

Compile each of the packages in this order - xine-lib, xine-ui, libdvdcss, libdvdread, libdvdnav, xine-dvdnav with the following commands:

    tar xvfz <package name>
    cd <package directory>
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make
    make install

When you get all 6 installed, you're finished. When you start xine you will see a button that says "nav" Click it, and xine will spend a few seconds reading the DVD. Then when you press play, all should be good.
