Get an antivirus, and some firewall software or hardware. That's a good start. If you need help finding those things or want to know what they are, reply back and I'll give you some links or explain.

Personally i believe in tomorrow so here are my thoughts. Black Ice is a good start however admitted by themselves they are not yet XP/ network user friendly, thus my refund. I tried a few and finally settled on Norton Antivirus 2002, also behind the Norton 8.0 Firewall. Both user friendly and XP/Network friendly. What ever you choose remember Norton and Mcaffie," no pun intended" don't always run well together. Best bet is download a trial version and try them out. Then run with them.
Just when i got used to yesterday, along came today.

Disable all the services that you do not require. This can be done from your control panel.

Different services have different associated vulnerabilities, so if you disable all services that are not essential, you are also eliminating the vulnerabilities.

Do a search on google for "Win2k Hardening" documentation.

    Good luck

All of the above and run MBSA (Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser) to make sure you have the latests patches.

You could also use X-Teq Setup utility ! A GUI software that lets you adjust some custom settings in the registry without getting everything **** up !

    Good luck !

Setup the security templates, enable client IPSec and configure it, modify your registry enabling defense against certain types of DoS attacks, patch your 2000 prof and IE, firewall (hardware is recommended because it is more configurable), anti virus (AVG or what suites your taste), sweep for spyware(keyloggers, etc...), clean out all the possible privacy threats like cookies, use a deletion program like nortons wipe program, use the EFS or encryption file system on your 2k prof, use the backup utility just in case something wrong happens during your configuration or an external threat. Use the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and scroll up just in case i forgot something.

Good luck with the configurations, itll take awhile. Dont forget to follow the things mentioned above my post.
