Linux: format c:???
I've just installed Red Hat 7.2 on my Win98SE box. I have one HDD, with no partitions. Under the installation i seemd to have choosen the expert-install, which I don't know how to use. It's just text....I have'nt learned that yet. And the Partition program in Red-Hat installation have made it impossible for the Win98 SE start-up floppy to find any HDD at all! because I want to format the HDD, because the text version of linux is just a little to complex for me yet I know that Windows and Linux use two different file systems, Win uses FAT32 and Linux uses ext2. So I have given up formating from DOS, so my question is:......How do I format the HDD now? can I do it from the command line in the Linux version I have installed? please help me...

Ok, you have to have at least 1 partition if you have Windows.

If you partitioned with DiskDruid, you may have hosed your Windows partition. Are you wanting to get rid of Windows completely, or are you wanting to dual boot? If you want to get rid of Windows, Red Hat can partition your drive automatically for you. But if you're wanting to dual boot it may be a little trickier.
We can help you more if you tell us how you want your system set up.

I would suggest letting Red Hat partition and format for you during the install. DiskDruid has an option to do that when you get to partitioning. At least I'm pretty sure it does..... I haven't paid attention to that in a long time.

Just boot from the CD and re-run the installation.

When you run the install program, use fdisk, or disk druid to remove
all existing partitions. This makes the drive appear to the computer
as though it were new, virgin, unformatted.
You can go on from there to create new partitions and install linux
or you can abort the install and install windows instead.
If you choose to install windows at that time, the first step
is to run fdisk (the windows install program does this by default)
and create a FAT partition, otherwise DOS cannot see the drive.
Dual boot installations are a bit more complex, since you must
create multiple partitions of different types.
You must use the expert install method if you are setting up
for dual boot. If you don't need dual boot, and it's
your first installation, choose "workstation", and it will
create a default partitioning scheme without asking you
a lot of confusing questions.
Later, after you have studied all the docs, you may feel like
doing an expert install, but you have to understand partitioning
to do in intelligently.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.
