Yeah, I have to agree. 1.4 is a little on the rocky side, but I think that's mostly because of the move to GCC 3. Portage blows everything else out of the water, and I think this is the direction Linux package management is headed in the future. Once they get reverse dependency mapping into portage, it will be as feature complete as any other package management system out there. I'd say it's comparable to apt-get, even as it is.
I'm building a new 1.4 system on my shiny new 120GB ATA-133 Raid-0 array as we speak, and I can't wait to run some benchmarks to see how it smokes.
[EDIT] After a long night of compiling, I now have some answers. 2 60GB ATA-133 drives in software raid-0 with 256k chunks and ext3, hdparm -tT returns:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in .52 seconds=246.15 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in .80 seconds=80.00 MB/sec
All I can say is, if you're not using Linux you're just missing out on all the fun.
Do what you want with the girl, but leave me alone!
