are you looking at actually hosting web services for others??

In reality if that is what your looking at doing theres quite a bit involved. Your going to want to get familiar with high bandwidth connections such as T1's and such (most consumer grade cable modems and dsl lines are high speed for download but as a webhoster your going to want fast upstream). Your also going to want to familiarize yourself with the popular webservers out there. Mostly Apache.

If your looking at dedicating machines, look into appliances, Cobalt's Raq appliances are an excellent platform for hosting as they are easy to maintain, quite stable, and kept up to date with patches and such. The pricepoints on these are also very agreeable as you can find them new for fairly cheap, and on ebay even cheaper. Just make sure if you roll out a used one to reload it first (restore software is purchaseable or downloadable in iso format)

deres de linkski..... I do actually run several of these, they make excellent small workgroup servers, and are quite pretty looking in a small businesses office (a few of my clients keep them in the lobby for looks).
