    INTRODUCING RED HAT LINUX 8.0

OK, if you're still using Red Hat Linux 6.1 on the desktop you need to
minimize Under the Brim for a moment and take a look at this. Seriously.
    Do it now.

    http://redhat.rsc03.net/servlet/cc5?...hgtpgLQhjnV2VR

This is Red Hat Linux 8.0.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 comes in two versions: Personal and Professional. And
features some brilliant technical upgrades like a new kernel, easy
graphical installation, a menu structure that makes sense... But the
real show is the interface. We think you'll see why.

    See the 8.0 demo:

GRANNY, LOCK THE DOORS! RED HAT'S GOING ON THE ROAD

Next week here in the United States we observe Columbus Day, which this
year marks the 510th anniversary of the year that Columbus "discovered"
America. Which the Native Americans had "discovered" at least 12,000 years
earlier. And was subsequently "discovered" by Jack Kerouac, Charles
Kuralt, William Least Heat Moon, and Neil Diamond, among others.

We want in on the action.

On October 31st, Red Hat will embark on Red Hat Road Tour 2002. Four
men. Two weeks. One RV. One big country. And one solitary purpose:
to discover the state of Linux in America.

We invite you to follow along on the adventure of a lifetime as our
ragtag gang of ruffians meets with Linux users like yourself all across
the United States to find out what they like and don't like. What they
want and don't want. And most importantly, what they expect from Red
Hat. And who knows, maybe we can even teach folks a thing or two about
    Linux along the way.

Our thanks to IBM eServer xSeries Servers, official sponsor of the
    Red Hat Road Tour 2002.

Details about the tour will be available on redhat.com next week.

enterprise-class performance for a clustered Oracle database in a Linux
environment, and clearly demonstrate the cost and maintenance benefits
of running Linux-based hardware and software in enterprise computing
    environments.

    TIPS AND TRICKS:
GETTING STARTED WITH OPEN SOURCE IN EDUCATION - PART TWO

Last month began a four-part journey to get open source software
into a K-12 school. Some of the homework assignments were:
    - research websites
    - determine IT needs
    - compile a nice list of answers
    - ask questions
    - add even more answers
The content of that should comprise the answers to the
"Where are we?" and "Where should we be?" questions.

    This month: Planning.

AFFECT CHANGE: TAKE THE RED HAT SURVEY

A few months ago we ran a survey in Under the Brim to learn more about
what you think of Red Hat. We received over 1000 responses and are so
excited about what we found out that we want to learn more. This is your
chance to put your stamp on Red Hat. Tell us what you think, and help us
    change for the better.

    Take the survey:

    ------------------------------------

    I WANT MY MP3s...(and DVDs)

Red Hat did not ship MP3 and DVD players in our 8.0 release. If you
thought we were just checking to see if you were paying attention,
you're wrong. Due to conflicts between patent licensing and the
licensing of our application source code, (MP3) support has been
removed from applications in Red Hat Linux.

Here's some pointers to further information:

YOU NEED A NEW SHIRT. WE CAN HELP YOU WITH THAT.

Don't you think it's time you retired that "mount and fsck" t-shirt?
Your cubemates think the joke is old and the people in finance just
think you're gross. Good news. We've just added two new t-shirts to the
Red Hat store. Both are black and sport a small shadowman on front, big
one on back--with a special quote from Shadowman himself. The first
shirt says, "Hand over the code and no one gets hurt." The second,
"You're free, now go and help the others." Your pick, but buying both
lets you avoid doing laundry for an extra day.

UNDER THE BRIM CONTEST 36: MAKE IT STOP

You read about the Red Hat Road Tour 2002 in last month's UTB. Our
contest last month asked you to send your request for why the
tour should stop at your user group or school.

Our winner: Talk about geek cred. Louise M and Waseem D from Yorktown
High School in Arlington, Virgina put their plea in a Python script. We bit.
Congratulations. In just a few weeks, Arlington High School will get a
visit from four Red Hatters and an RV...

And our second-place winner, Jan, who sent us a stop request from
Pretoria, South Africa, is the winner of the 2002 Tour care package
    filled with Red Hat collectibles.

    ------------------------------------

UNDER THE BRIM CONTEST 37: 8.0 TESTIMONIALS

We want to hear what you think of Red Hat Linux 8.0. For this
month's UTB contest, write up your most heartfelt 8.0
testimonial and send it to us. Tell us what you like, don't like.
Be honest. Write it up and send it to:

feedback@redhat.com (with the subject line: 8.0 Testimonials)

We'll publish a selection of the reviews on redhat.com and in
Under the Brim next month. And for the reviews we like
best--good, bad, and ugly--we'll send you one of the new
    Red Hat t-shirts:
