You might just have a damaged CD-ROM. If UKnetSec's advice doesnt work, try downloading the images from the Suse site and burn a new set of install CD's.

I had SuSE since version 7.1 (kinda newbie). Now I've upgraded it to 8.0 and further to 8.1.
In the 8.x distro's, CD1 is intended for complete (new) installations using BOOT FLOPPIES. The 2nd CD is for the "alternate installation", as it contains the images of the floppy disks on it. You BOOT from the 2nd CD, and just after a few moments, the installer will ask you to put the 1st CD in drive.
3rd, and much easier, you can boot directly from the DVD disk included in the distibution. It has all the things on it , so you won't need to change the disks in drive.
Wh .. oops! Let\'s start over!
