    Question How to setup UNIX

    I've had it with windows!

    A friend of mine gave me UNIX solaris 8!
    Everyone tells me that this is a hard unix to start with.

    Since I only work on win and dos, I don't even know how to begin the installation!
    Can anyone recommend me any site with info on unix installation?

    Or just tell me how to start the installation.
    Do I need to make a new partition? Do I need a boot disk?
    The cd I was given is not bootable.

    I assume this was for Intel, most Solaris deployments are on Sun hardware.

    Although people find it harder to use i.e. it ships with fewer nice utilities, I really like the Solaris install program. It's the only OS which asks *ALL* the questions at the beginning - everything.

    You answer a heap of questions, like what language, what you want installed, partitioning and the root password, then it goes away and gets on with it. Upon your return, you get a login prompt.

    If the CD is not bootable, are you sure you're trying to boot it on a machine of the right architecture?

    The CD should have some sort of information on how to create a bootdisk.
    (Or a directory on the cd which contains boot info)

    If you need information, best bet is to visit Solaris's site http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/

    Another area to visit for assistance is http://www.unix.com/
    (Great for newbs and senior users)

    As for partitioning, is Unix is the only OS you will be running, then you don't have to set a partition for it. The installer should take care of that for you.

    I am planning to install it on an intel P3 550 MHZ

    Will it be possible to have both win and unix?
    I am a complete newbie with unix, so please keep it simple1

    Yeah it is possible to have win and unix on the same sys.Try www.solaris-x86.org.Unix not hard as they tell.Its really thrilling and challenging.As ritche said "Unix is simple but to understand its simplicity you should be a geniuis."

    Putting both Windows and *nix on a system is simple.

    Now I'm speaking out of Linux experience, but since Linux is based of Unix, it should be the same...

    First thing is to install Windows.
    Then install a partitioning tool (ie: PowerQuest Partition Magic)
    Then partition off your drive (1 Pri Part for Win (either Fat32 or NTFS), 1 Pri Part for Unix (Unix fat)
    Then install a bootloader (ie: LILO or Grub from Linux, Bootmanager for Win)
    Then install Unix on the second partition.
    Then modify the bootloader to recognise both OSs and determine which is the main loader
    (ie: which OS boots first)

    That should be it, in it's simplest form.
