Getting an IP address using an Instant Messenger

Hey! I need some help...Someone asked me if there are other ways to get an IP address from someone using MSN Instant Messenger other than sending a file and using netstat. I said not yet. My understanding is that the computers are directly linked together when they send files, like P2P. Am I wrong?

Also, which Instant Messengers are vulnerable to this way of getting an IP address?

    Thanks for any help...

There are many tools you can download to accomplish this feat.

And to answer your question, whenever, wherever, whatever programm you are using, when you make a direct connection to exchange files, or what ever your IP can be exposed by that command. Doesnt have to be a messaging programm. Your Ip is broadcast all over the place, its the only way data can fid its destination. I would recommend a lesson in TCP/IP, before you go any further.

Also, good luck at keeping this thread outta the very negitve catagory.

netstat -a doesnt work, it will only give you the ip of aol or whoever the im service is. however, if you can connect directly through transfering a file, then run the netstat -an command while the file is in trans, you will get the ip of the other party.
