IDS FAQs?

Checking out google.com and this site and looking for any basic info. or FAQs on IDS?

I've heard of Snort of Linux, but I have not used it. I know of nmap and use it once in awhile on my network.

Basically my network consist of two boxes, one Linux, one Windows with a hub/firewill and cable modum. I was wanting to just find out what or who is scanning it.

I had Zone Alarm on the Windows box and it would shows scans all of the time, but I stopped using it because the hub/firewall had a conflict.
