Server Emulator for Messenger, AIM, Or MSN?

does anyone know if there is a project out there working to make a server for any chat client?
at the moment i just think it would be something cool to look at and play with

i'm pretty sure that AOL_TW & M$ & ICQ wouldn't want you to have the source for their IM servers? maybe not- maybe they don't care- i dunno. but i've never seen anything like that before. Now if you just want to look at some cool code- there are tons of chat client/server projects (i'm sure you know this...) . sorry i couldn't answer your question- although that would be cool :-)
