Adding alternative printer drivers in NT 4.0

I'm trying to connect my XP client to my NT 4.0 server shared printer. Its not allowing me to connect to the printer because I do not have the correct drivers in my NT box for my XP client to accept. How can I add more drivers to the NT Server?

    thanks

    What printer are you using?
What method are you connecting your printer to the NT box? (parallel or USB)
What OS's does your driver disc support?

    sorry about that.

The printer is a HP Laserjet 1100 that is connected to the server via LPT1.

There are drivers available for this printer for XP and NT 4.0.

    Any ideas?

What happens when you try to install the driver locally onto your NT server?
Have you tried installing the driver as a network driver, then adding driver to the XP box using a network install?

I tried installing locally but it will not allow me because I already have the NT drivers

You already have the NT drivers?
    Have you tried sharing them?
    Uninstall/reinstall?

what your email addy and ill send you a document on getting this set up

You could also try downloading the XP driver from HERE then install as a local printer, then redirect the port to the network name of the printer on the NT server!

    Sorry forget the above!

I further investigated and you cannot share from an NT to a win XP, you can do it vice versa, but not this way.

    Sorry man, but i tried!

    Cheers

You can do it. Here are the instructions:

Cannot Add Windows XP Printer Drivers to Windows NT 4.0
To add a network printer that is managed by a Windows NT 4.0-based computer to a Windows XP-based computer, install the printer locally on LPT1 on the Windows XP-based computer. Follow these steps:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Printers and Faxes.
Right-click the printer, and then click Properties.
On the Ports tab, click LPT1.
    Click Add Port.
    Double-click Local Port.
Type \\ServerName\PrinterShare, where ServerName is the name of the server and PrinterShare is the name of the printer share.
    Click OK.

Here is the article that I got that from:

Well if this works could you please let me know, because we have tested this setup and have had no joy getting it working.

That method that those genius' at MS have come up with is common sense in setting up a peer to peer network.

The fact of the matter is you cant network an XP client on an NT server, but as i said im willing to hold my hands up if im wrong!
