    cable intranet

i am going to be switching from my crappy 56k to either cable or dsl. i was reading up on the differences between the two and how they both work and so on.my question is, is since cable is basically, if i understand it right, a LAN, is there anyway that you would be able to view other peoples computers who are using the same line as you? and if so how, and if this is not possible then why?
