Linux - NTFS Support
I would like to mount my windows partition on Linux but it is using the ntfs file system. Will I have to re-compile the kernel/load a module etc. I know that write support is extremely experimental but I just want to be able to read from that partition. ANy tips, resources etc will be appreciated. Thanks.

Ow I did this some time ago... I had to recompile my kernell and that only gave me read acces, but it's possible. I have to look up the site I got the module from... or you can search google yourself :s
I'll post it when I found it again.
Ow yes... newer distro's already have that ability, so you could also upgrade to the newest version of your distro...

thats because the kernel must have been compiled with the ntfs module, and why did you phrase that as a question?
Zen, here is a good resourse, search the forums, it is explained in a thread somewhere but i don't know it off the top of my head. also check out linuxnewbie.org and search through their forums before asking. chances are that it has already been discussed there also. and it has a nice help file on recompiling the kernel.
Hmm...theres something a little peculiar here. Oh i see what it is! the sentence is talking about itself! do you see that? what do you mean? sentences can\'t talk! No, but they REFER to things, and this one refers directly-unambigeously-unmistakably-to the very sentence which it is!

I use my Windows 2000 partition just fine from Mandrake 9, and yes, it's read only.
Since I do not know what distro you are running (just the kernel, Slack, RedHat), I'll be really vague and give you a download page: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/downloads.html#ntfs
and the main page: http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/
And Google yielded a thread that might be useful: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/5064
Lastly, you might want to check The Linux Documentation Project http://www.tldp.org
hope this helps,

(V)/\>< what tampabay420 did was write the way we speak in (some of) the states. we end a statement with the inflections of a question which implys one dosnt know why the original question is even being asked. an abreveated way of saying: why do you say that? it works fine for me.
