Changing Start Screens on Win 98 - if you don’t know

On Windows 98 , there are two files in the c:\windows folder Both files are 320 x 400 bitmaps. The files are


1) LOGOS.SYS – YOU MAY SHUTDOWN SCREEN
2) LOGOW.SYS – WINDOWS IS SHUTING DOWN SCREEN

You are allowed to edit these screens and have your own screen, as long as they are 320 x 400 bitmaps.

If you image is large you’ll need soft wares such as Corel Photoshop or paint shop pro to resize the picture to 320 x 400 bitmaps.

Then you’ll need to save it as .sys extension.

To change the Start screen in win 98….

1) Create a file called logo.sys in 320 x 400 bitmaps and place it on c:\.

Windows XP

Change Picture on the Welcome Screen & Start Menu
1) Just click on the picture on the Start Menu.

2) This will open the Pick a new picture for your account part of the User Accounts applet.

Here you can pick any of the pictures included, or use your own picture by using the Browse for more pictures feature




How to hide Users on the XP Welcome Screen
1. Start the Registry editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \
3. Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
4. Name the new value exactly as the Username
5. Leave the Value data as 0
6. If you want to enable this user again on the Welcome Screen, either double-click the Username value, and change the Value data to 0, or delete the Username
7. Close the registry editor






How to display Administrator Account on Welcome Screen

1. Start the registry editor
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon \ SpecialAccounts \ UserList \
3. Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
4. Name the new value Administrator
5. Double-click this new value, and enter 1 as it's Value data
6. Close the registry editor





How to Disable Windows XP Startup Screen
To disable the Windows XP Startup screen:
1. Click Start, and right-click on My Computer
2. From the menu choose Properties
3. From System Properties, select the Advanced tab, and press the Settings button under the Startup and Recovery heading
4. Click the Edit button and locate the line that loads Windows XP. To the end of that line add /sos, so it would look like this: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos
5. Save your changes, and press OK (2x) to close the System Properties
Now when you start Windows, you will see some system messages, instead of the Windows XP logo.




Windows 2000
Change the Logon Screen Saver
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and click OK.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
3. In the details pane (right-side), double-click the SCRNSAVE.EXE string value item.
4. In Value data, type the path and name of the screen saver, and then click OK.

IMPORTANT: Make sure that you specify the path correctly to the screen saver. If the screen saver is located in %SystemRoot%\System32, the explicit path is not required.
You have now changed the logon screen saver.
Change the Logon Screen Saver Timeout Time
You can also change the amount of time that elapses before the logon screen saver starts. The default is 900 seconds (15 minutes).



To change the length of time before the logon screen saver starts
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and click OK.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
3. In the details pane (right-side), double-click the ScreenSaveTimeOut string value item.
4. In Value data, type the number of seconds, and then click OK.
You have now changed the length of time that elapses before the logon screen saver starts.



Disable the Logon Screen Saver
To disable the logon screen saver
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedt32, and click OK.
2. Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
3. In the details pane (right-side), double-click the SCREENSAVETIMEOUT string value item.
4. In Value data, replace the number 1 with the number 0, and then click OK.
You have now disabled the logon screen saver.
