BSA Sent my ISP this !!

My poor ISP got this...... Me thinks my IP address got spoofed!!!

What do you think ???

The above computer program(s) is/are being made available for copying,
through downloading, at the above location without authorization from the
copyright owner(s).

Based upon BSA's representation of the copyright owners in anti-piracy
matters, we have a good faith belief that none of the materials or
activities listed above have been authorized by the rightholders, their
agents, or the law. BSA represents that the information in this
notification is accurate and states, under penalty of perjury, that it is
authorized to act in this matter on behalf of the copyright owners listed
above.

We are giving notice of these activities pursuant to Section 512 of Title
17 of the U.S. Code (as enacted by the 'Online Copyright Infringement
Liability Limitation Act'). We expect that you will take expeditious action
to remove or disable access to the materials described above, and thereby
prevent the illegal reproduction and distribution of pirated software via
your company's network. As you know, illegal on-line activities can result
in 50 million people on the Internet accessing and downloading a copyrighted
product worldwide without authorization - a highly damaging activity for the
copyright holder.

Yikes. That's not good at all. Do you run the ISP? Or was this from your ISP to you?

Also, if you have not been using p2p, you can tell BSA you have not been using it and investigate the matter yourself by checking for backdoors, blocking the Gnutella port(s). When BSA sends you a nasty letter like this, it is time to act, because if they still see the downloading going on (if it's from your connection or not) prepare for serious legal problems.

What do you think might have led to this? Also, can you ask them HOW they found "you" doing it? Lastly, if you are running the ISP, somebody within the network might be running a "node." I would check it out...

well even if you were running p2p, they have the file names but they don't have the files so they can't prove what the files really are/were, because file names and extensions can be changed as can file sizes, unless THEY downloaded the entire files from you. but you aren't, like you said, running p2p so don't worry about it and contact the John R. Wolfe guy to rectify the situation with your internet logs for the above mentioned times in hand.

But like I said... is Spoofing my IP address is possible....
Also check my firewall and 6346 is not open.

This is the kind of $$$$ that makes me think BSA deserves a good swift kick in the assets. Don't believe me, check out http://www.the-underdogs.org and take a look at their battle with the BSA - they were told to take a game off their site that hasn't been published in over 20 years...

Just tell them that you'll look into the matter and find who is responsable.... This should atleast buy you some time for better trojan scans and FW updates. I've seen peaple share files off of office PCs before so you may want to take a good look at some of your co-workers' activities. If all else fails keep eveything calm by being nice....

In other words send this attachment along with a letter & ask how did they come to the conclusion that you were runing a haven for piracy?

Hummm .... What is your network like? Got any bridged networks that could be running FTP?
