I just installed Webmin for my *nix box..it's very cool and it's Free..

Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any browser that supports tables and forms (and Java for the File Manager module), you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and so on.
Webmin consists of a simple web server, and a number of CGI programs which directly update system files like /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/passwd. The web server and all CGI programs are written in Perl version 5, and use no non-standard Perl modules.

Supported Operating Systems

Because different Unix-like operating systems use different locations for their various config files, Webmin can only support systems for which it has been configured. The following operating systems are supported by version 1.050 of Webmin :

The best supported systems at the moment are Solaris, Linux (Redhat in particular) and FreeBSD.

Hi sweet-angel.

Indeed it is a cool application. I use webmin for over a year now and its not bad at all. Although it is a security hole since it means one more open port and one more possibilty to access important files. I would recomend that you only activate it when needed, otherwise keep it shut down. If you need it from a remote workstation, then ssh to the server and activate it. After you are done using it, shut it down again. Its a very helpful tool and does offer many many options. I use it mainly for the dhcp server and routing. Hmmm, you said that it supports iptables....i thought it only supports ipchains. Let me check on that point again, so please dont "neg" me for the firewall comment. I setup the firewall manually which is why im not sure on the webmin section on firewalling.

I recomend webmin for admins who dont have the time to work in command mode, its fast and works great. Just remember to activate it only when needed.

One more thing...... If you are running LILO, then its advisable to add a something to LILO. Without that, the whole computer might freeze.

in /etc/lilo.conf after where it says append="enableapic vga=0x0317" on the same line, edit it to

append="enableapic vga=0x0317 disableapic ide=nodma apm=off"

That should keep the computer from freezing. That only happens if you log into webmin and stay idle in there for a couple of minutes. This does not always happen, but incase it does the solution is that change in /etc/lilo.conf. Im not sure if you would have to add the same if using another bootmanager like GRUB.

Also make sure you have the latest version of webmin, since an earlier version had some major buffer overflow weaknesses which actually gave you a root shell (only if you have assigned users for certain tasks in webmin) giving them full root access.

hi thanks for the tips..(I've installed that Webmin for my FreeBSD 4.7 box...but that's good tips for my Linux box..)
