Just got DSL running like @#$!

Hey wassup all. Jost got DSL and its running like absolut crap. Its going through a Watchguard SOHO firewall. The firewall is also the router and handles NAT. ITs taking a real long time for stuff to load up. Just wondering what i can do on my end to speed things up.

    Thanx

First find out if it is your router. Unhook your router and plug one PC into your cable modem. You probably need extra software to do this.

If you are running faster by going directly through the modem rather than the router, then you know the router is your problem.

Then disable your firewall on the router. If it speeds up then you know it is a firewall setting.

NAT shouldn't be the problem, because it keeps track of where the traffic is coming from and where it is going to. I've never heard NAT to be a problem like that, to slow down your traffic.

You might also want to check your cables. Make sure you don't have any bad kinks or cuts in them.

Also, there are line filters that you should have recieved. You will need those too... othewise that can mess you up pretty good too.

Maybe the problem is on the ISP side? You can test your bandwith here.

I'd run that test both with and without the router.

    Hey Hey,

First thing I would recommend is to go to http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and find out what your speed is, and compare that to the CIR that your DSL provider gave you. Also I'd check the fine print of your contract. The company we have our DSL with only guarentees the CIR on certain network cards (namely the ones they, and their partners sell). Then i'd either run a TCP/IP optimization tweak, or go into the registry and do it myself (if you're running Win).. When I started playing with my registry, I noticed it improved my speeds slightly. I'd also go into Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> Lan Settings and make sure there are no boxes checked. If your brower looks for a a config automatically when it runs, when it has no need to, this can slow down your initial browsing.

HTRegz posted about registry tweaks. That does help.

Here is a program that has TONS of common registry tweaks. I would recommend that if you are inexperienced with the registry.

There are quite a few tweaks for your internet settings and speeds.

That program is also good for privacy purposes. It will clean up your registry pretty good, so you don't have to clear your history and recent docs. and quite a few other things.

There is an update button that you can choose recent updates or create your own and upload
them for others to use too.

Great tool in my opinion. I have it on every machine I have at home.

www.dslreports.com has a great tweaking tool that will test your connection and suggest settings that can be changed to improve speed and reliability. It's worth checking out.

Soia, what services do you have running on the WatchGuard SOHO firewall? I've never used a WatchGuard SOHO (I administer a Firebox) but I'm assuming that it is running certain services similar to the other solutions provided by WatchGuard. I'm just wondering if your problems are in there somewhere...

hmmm... interesting results when I use the three speed-checkers recommended.

    http://www.zdnet.co.uk/misc/band-test/
    Resulted in 850.5 Kbps

    http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
    Resulted in 1.8 Mbps

    http://www.dslreports.com/
    Resulted in 2909 Kbps

Whay such a discrepancy? Distance between the testing server and me?

Traffic on the internet is the most likely culprit. Distance of the test machine from a major backbone comes into play also.
