Yeah, this was sad. It reminded me of the Challenger in '86 and how hard it hit people to watch all those talented and courageous Astronauts disintegrate (sp?). They are in my prayers also. The number that stuck out for me was when they said something about the shuttle coming in at about 12,500 mph! Woah!

    Peace to all,

Hmmm....speed of "light"??? That's just a bit fast. That picture proves one more reason why FOX is a better news source. I'm not even going to pull out that soapbox.

Prayer. The families and especially the children faced with this loss need prayer.

It's sad that such a loss happened to such brave persons. The reasons are still to be investigated, but what is important that this set back should not happen again and although we have lost some important results, Am still hopeful of results of some of experiments to the human community.

Prayers for those souls, who passed away in such a tragic manner

it is supposed to say the speed of sound. 18 times the speed of sound.

but when i heard this, i thought that twice the speed of sound was the speed of light. hmm, i dunno. maybe i am wrong. but if twice the speed of sound is the speed of light. they were going 9 times the speed of light. but that still seems too fast. i mean, camera's followed its decent.

Red face Speed of Sound Vs Speed of light

Speed of sound, depending on how High you are = 612 MPH (miles per Hr)
Speed of sound also depends on how thick the air is
Speed of sound also depends on type of air and other factors

Speed of Light is 186,000 Miles per Second, minor changes depends
on what spectrum (color) you want to time.
If I remember right the lower the spectrum
the slower the light goes, a Dopler effect of sorts.

Now into Star Trek Speeds...... What does 18 times the speed of light
convert to in Warp Speed ???

    Exclamation err..

Well.. they are not supposed to be faster than light. Think of light as a speed limit to everything. Until someone says that a given particle managed to be faster than this during 0.0000001 seconds. Then, you can blame Einstein. Speed of light is about 300,000 km/s.
From Earth to moon, you have 384 403 km. A second.
Anyway, the accident was really disgusting. A tragedy, whatever the speed.

    Speed of Sound

    Hey guy's

It's speed of sound. It's called MACH 18.I am sure we haven't reached warp 18, let alone warp 1.

But I am keeping my fingers crossed, we've got the theory bit done.

Speed of sound is 343 meters/second in 20 C air. Light in the same conditions is around 300 000 kilometers/second, a bit less. Comparing speed of sound to speed of light, 0,343 km/h versus 300000 km/h, well, that's a bit more than two times faster... Nothing goes faster than light in a vacuum, nothing.

According to the Warp Factor Chart, 18x light speed is about Warp 2.5. It is also impossible to reach Warp factors over 10.

Edit/Add: According to the Warp Factor Calculator, more precise numbers for 18x light speed are:
    Classic Star Trek: 2.62075
    The Next Generation: Warp 2.38003
