    Good Hiding Place for Files

    Hi all,

I was just faffing about with a file search program when I discovered this by accident.

If you create a folder within windows fonts (can be done from dos) and save to it it doesn't appear from within windows and the files in it can't be searched for.

    might be handy.

the only problem is this. if you read it properly, you need to boot into true dos. and now days this is hard to come by. you need a boot disk made from 95/98. or otherways. and besides. why would you want to do that. to access the files you need to boot into true dos to read them and boot into true dos to write them. besides, it woud only be of use if the files you place under the folder under fonts, would only work if they worked with dos. cause as you say, you cant access them in windows

you can get there with explorer..

    example, on a win9x box...

    Start -> Run -> "command"

    cd c:\windows\fonts

    mkdir test

    then in explorer ( [Windowsign] + [E] )

I type in the bar C:\windows\fonts

I see fonts but no test dir.

    now in the bar C:\windows\fonts\test

ah, the empty folder where I can stash my ultra l33t secret pr0n

    Exclamation Pessomist Alert!!!

    Hey,

Trust not. just because youre grandad is looking at your files doesn't mean you have do be such a pessomist.

If you really are desperate to stop him looking at your files then label your drive and e-mail me what you labeled it.

I will create a small tsr program to stop his XP mapping to this drive or at least hide it unless he boots into true dos.

Hope this cheers you up a bit. !!!

i don't understand why you won't just PGP everything?
Stick all of your files into an Archive (zip, tar) and PGP the archive?
I think this would do just fine, although why is your grandfather snooping around your files anyway, ask him to stop and respect your privacy!

Insitronics: PGP only rules if dear old Grandpappy doesn't install a keyboard sniffer.... If he has/does then PGP is just another step to go through to _not_ hide his files.....

I become mcgyver when it's time to hide files, even tho I am the only person who uses my computer anyway, I zip it, PGP it, rename it to 1a3g3p7.dll or some other innocuous system-file-type name and hide it in a folder that has a ton of them. and, on top of that, I used EFS to encrypt it so that if anyone else somehow accesses my system, unless they are under my username, they cannot access it at all. I don't bother specifying a hidden attribute, because, well, without my username password, the pgp passcode, and zip password, I couldn't even access it, and I'M the one who hid it. I was going to write a program, a pr0n viewer, that stores all media and picture files in one encrypted DLL or DAT file, and decrypts and views them directly from that file, in a totally secure manner. but, I realised I didn't need it, and i didn't want to give child pornographers and predators a method of getting away with their crimes, so, i decided not to make it, and even if i did, i wouldn't distribute it.
