If I understand your question, you are trying to open an installer and all you get are strange symbols? Your downloads might be either....
1. Be associated with the worng application. What is the extension (SOMETHING.EXE, MYDOC.DOC...) In that case, you need to do the following: Hold the shift key while right-clicking over the icon and choose "open with..." and choose the correct program with the dialog box.
2. The program might be compressed. If that's the case, get WinZip here: http://www.winzip.com/ If you do not have the program, it might open as strange symbols.
3. The file could be corrupt, but that's not likely.
hope this helps.

id venture to say its an install package that has been compressed using PKzip. if im right then you need to download and install pkzip or winzip.
after its installed just double-click on the file in question to open it. then you should have to look for a file called setup or install.exe
sorry linuxguy99 ive been trying to post this for a while and keep timing out.

once you have a program on their like winzip or pkzip that wont happen. they.ll register the file types they are intended for and open them automatically. is the last three letters of the file ".zip"
your right linuxguy but some folks can be funny that way and i didn't want to offend you. glad your a regular guy!

Right here: http://www.winzip.com/downau81.cgi?winzip81.exe
After download, double-click the icon and follow the on screen instructions.

banananuts most programms you download need to be installed before you can run then. that is, different files need to be placed in different directorys and registered with the system before they work right. this is all done by the install.exe if the install package is large the package is compressed first or made smaller to save time while downloading and must be uncompressed first before its usable. this can be done most of the time using winzip or a similar program.sometimes the download is a self extracting file and dosn't required an additional de-compressor but the need for uncompressing is still there even though it takes care of it itself.
