    ESMTP port error

    Hey fellas,

I'm installing software called Unimessage Pro (PC faxing) on a WIN 2000 computer and when I go to log the connected device on (Minolta FAX) I get an error message that says "ESMTP mail port is currently in use by other application". I have installed this software many times and not come across this error. So it is obvioulsy something to do with the PC.

My question is, Is there a command that might list what is actively using ESMTP (I guess that is port 25)? What would that command be? Do some computers have their own internal mail server or appliction that might act as one?

If anybody needs more details please let me know....

    Thanks again everybody!

If you are running IIS it installs a basic SMTP relay. You can check by telnetting to port 25. Go to start --> run --> telnet localhost 25.

Why, however, is the Unimessage Pro using a known port number like the SMTP(port 25)? That's a privileged port and usually reserved for that. Can you alter the port for the fax software?

No you can not change the port. The fax device is connected via a nic so it uses an ip address. Internet faxes (T.37 protocol) must use the SMTP just like email. In fact, internet faxes (tiff.f files) are treated just like emails when it comes time to distribut them. Doesn't ESMTP use a different port than SMTP?

No. Not that I know of. ESMTP is just a variation of SMTP.
