*.avi cutter

hey guys,

i have looked at google and used their pigeons ;P

and im looking for a cutter for *.avi files. its mainly because when i get a movie in a format and i want to convert it into *.vcd and because of the format the file then becomes too big for the cd.

if there is such a cutter, can someone let me know aboutit and point me in the right direction. hmm, just wondering if there is a supa-doopa cutter that does all your avi's and mpeg's and even your mp3's all in one cutter. haha, dont think so.

As far as AVI's go....... VirtualDub will do the trick quite nicely for you... It's an incredible program.. I know my roommate swears by it.

Check out TMPGEnc ..... http://www.tmpgenc.net (its free) .... this will convert your avi to vcd suitable mpeg format for TMPGEnc to do its stuff. You will need a small program called decompressor (152kb another freeware product) for this ... pm me and I will email to you if you are trusting enough.

In the tools section of TMPGEnc it will allow you then to split the mpeg to cd size and Nero will do the rest . Most of my DVD backup's span two CD's.

I should add that I do this so the CD's play in my mpeg compliant standalone dvd player.

Roxios VideoPac (I think thats the proper name) does an excellent job also....even lets you control the exact frame where you make your "cut".

If your problem is fitting the re-encoded MPEG onto one CD, I think you are approaching it from the wrong perspective. There is no need to do anything to your source AVI. The destination file (MPG) is the problem. The most basic solution is to encode elementary audio and video streams with TMPGEnc and then mux them together with BBMpeg, setting the max file size at 797MB. BBMpeg will then split the streams into as many CD-sized portions as necessary and mux them. Not very elegant, but it works.

A better (IMO) but far more complex option is to learn how to use AVISynth and use the file prediction method developed by kwag and SansGrip over at the www.kvcd.net forums. Using kwag's methods, I recently made a VCD of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (143 minutes) on 1 CD at a resolution of 352x480 and it is visually indistinguishable from the DVD on my 27" TV.

Be sure to get v2.07 and NOT the 2.5 beta. 2.5 breaks all the plugins.

If you use VirtualDub to cut and splice video, be sure to set "direct stream copy" for both audio and video. It will be much faster and avoid unnecessary color space conversions and recompressions that may affect the quality of your video. Also change your Audio Interleaving preferences to preload 0 ms instead of the default 500 or you will have sync issues.

@Phat_Penguin:
I have had issues with TMPGEng's tools throwing the audio/video out of sync when splitting. As great an encoder as TMPG is, the tools suck eggs IMHO. VDub will open MPEG-1 natively, and there are specially modified versions that will open MPEG-2. Or you can load MPEG-2 via an AVISynth script using the mpeg2dec.dll plugin. Much better option than TMPG, IMO.
