Reset NT/2000/xp Password ?

Hey guys,

I saw this advert on ebay here :

which claims to do this :

Forgetting a password is one of the most annoying things that can happen and waste hours of your time guessing it or reinstallation of the operating System. This disk will enable you to change/reset the password of any user (including ADMINISTRATOR) on a Windows NT, 2000, XP installation WITHOUT knowing the old password. This disk is able to actually parse/follow the internal registry structure completely. It also handles (disables) syskey. You may either let the scripts try to figure out your configuration or you may do it manually from the shell prompts.

I wuz wondering, is this possible ? Has anyone tried it ?

I don't know.. sounds fishy..

But I could make you a linux floppy to do the same for any linux box

after boot there'll be a script asking to mount the root partition.. then it'll ask which usernames you want de-passworded...

then it opens /etc/shadow

and removes the password has..

tada a next reboot no passwords !!

There is a similar one that does that to a NT/2000 box (not sure about XP). Using Linux it modifies the SAM and thus let's you reset the password.

In fact, that link on Ebay looks like the instructions for http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . Note: I do not advocate the use of this. I use this as part of a lab I run in a course I teach. If you decide to use it, it is AT YOUR OWN RISK. I've had students foo-bar their Win2K installs with this.

i have a similar older disk that needs to be booted. it only works on win 9x and 2000. but its still good. will look at this one lster and tell you how it goes.

yess .. that ever happened to me mate, and i was so scared about that . becoz i can enter my own computer ( i forgot my password ). i try to reboot by CD and repair it and it still ask the password.
have u try to install it by reboot from cd and make a refresh installation ?
and when it ask you to format the NTFS or Fat32 .. just choose "leave the curent " and it will reainstall ur OS.
i know it is not the solution .. becoz at that time i don't know the sollution either. but let me give u an advice ( from a newbie ) .. always make more than one admin account on your system . i did that till now .. so if u forget you still have the other one.

i could be wrong but i've trid mate.

have you try the safe mode ? perhaps it helps u .. ( press f8 at the first boot )

For lost passwords, I use ERD Commander by Winternals. http://www.winternals.com/products/r...mander2002.asp

It's actually a pretty cool tool for other things too. You can get a 30 day evalutation copy to check it out.
