    help needed in instaling linux

    i use a pIII 1.2 ghz system running windows 98 with 40 gb hdd with 4 partitions each 10gb.all of them are formatted to run on fat32 file system. i don't know as what file system i should have to install linux on it. i plan to install caldera open linux on my pc.

    When you are about to do a linux install, you are going to want to delete one of those partitions that don't have data, then you are going to need to create several smaller partitions for your boot partition, root partition and swap partition. These are going to be in the ext3 or ext2 filesystems. The should be lots of documentation on partitioning the drive.

    PureXTC is on the right track..

    Linux needs a (any) partition and uses other filesystems..
    Linux can be installed on FAT(32) but it won't be a good (safe) and fast system..
    Most linux systems install on a ext2, ext3 or reiserfs system

    Most Linux distro's come with a nice installer that guids you thrue the process..
    I don't know about Caldera (never used it)..

    last time i used caldera it was a nice GUI install so you shouldnt have any trouble there.

    Sorry to take this off on a tangent, but I have to disagree with the_JinX on FAT32 not being a good choice. Even though the native Linux filesystems (ext2/3 and reiserfs) are your best choices, FAT32 with umsdos enabled is pretty decent security-wise.

    Spend a little money (cheap), and get a second hard drive.
    Once the second drive is installed, just put the linux install
    CD in, reboot from it and follow the instructions, paying attention
    to the fact that you want to install on the second drive
    instead of the first one. It is really a lot easier this way.

    if u just wanna install linux the simple way then using fdisk delete a partition and leave that space as free then u just install linux and choose autopartition while installing
