In the shadow of the war in/on Iraq, the Missile Chield is being discussed again by the neo-cons. They are working on a shield that should stop attacks from North-Korea or other countries with limited nuclear power. Even Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz are not that naive to think the shield could stop a massive Russian attack. But they do believe, and they're probably right, that an atomic war with Russia is higly unlikely.



Two cruisers meet, Russian and American. The Russian cruiser is panic-struck, the captain cries: "Who threw Valenki down on the control panel? Who threw Valenki down on the control panel????"
Americans only shake their heads wondering at the disorder at the Russian cruiser. "You would never see such things in America", they say.
The Russians respond: "There is no America any more! Who threw Valenki down on the control panel???"

This joke must date back to the Cold War, but it still is a possibility...

The 'shield' you are talking about is the so called 'Star Wars' program.
The US does not believe a massive attack from Russia is going to happen now.
What the US is proposing to set in place is a limited defensive system that would be able to detect the launch of a single nuke (long range missile - ICBM etc.) from a hostile state, and have the capability to destroy it whilst still in the Earth's atmosphere.
Incidentally, some facilities in the UK are being upgraded to assist the US in tracking this possible threat,

I must agree with negative on that one. Russia alone probably has enough nukes to destroy the entire earth. I doubt very much russia would try anything like invaded Britian or the U.S though.

I won't hesitate to add that Russia hasn't exactly had the money to keep all of their missile silos in "working" condition so a nuclear atack from them is quite unlikely, also.

I have to disagree with you on that one KD. Judging from history and the way the Russian's spend most of their income i think they have enough of those puppy's in fine working order to handle atleast the U.S.

I have seen shows on tv and read rumors of huge russian cities underground, possible in the hundreds to protect it's citizens during nuclear attacks, do any Russian AO'ers know of this? I have also seen factual reports of a seperate railway system under moscow for government officials and for transport of massive amounts of troops to western Russia. All i can say is that if nuclear war break's out between Russia and the U.S they are probably better off than U.S citizens as far any kind of shelter is concerned. I know the government hasnt told me of a place to go if a nuke comes flying in.

I a mnot sure about the whol republic part... lets call america fiscaly liberal and social fasciast..that fits the last few administrations . as for underground cities...the publice here may not survive, but our senetors will be fine, there is a huge bomb shetor under a resort out near washington.

I think all of the laws that are passed that invade a person's private life would be a good start (Anti-sodemy laws as the prime example). Add to that our continuing loss of privacy to the government, and losing restrictions on investigation oversight and we have social fascists.

I would also note the further destruction of church and state. Hell our attorney general was the leader of a political party whose published goal was to abolish the constitution and replace our government with a theocracy, and our secretary of education has basically stated that he wants to replace our school system with Baptist run schools. Now I don’t think attempted removal of personal freedom is limited to this administration (most of our presidents have tried to limit freedom to some extent) but this is the first group I can think of that is using religion as a tool to achieve their goal and this is keeping the right wing nut jobs who are usually the watchdogs for this unfortunately quiet.
