How to setup a SOHO wireless network
Lately I have found *a lot* of good tutorials on the Microsoft site. Perhaps they actually revamped their technical writing staff as I heard rumblings about this some time ago...
Anyway, this is an excellent tutorial on setting up wireless networks at home or in a small office. This will benefit those who are just getting into wireless. It touches on wireless standards and different terminology and whatnot too.
I'm providing the link rather than cut n paste as there are some good diagrams as well.

Just reading throught that sparked a few questions. Besides miliatary deployed on field missions, and people trying to get connectivity in places like the amazon or the himalayas, does anyone really use an ad hoc network anymore?
i\'m starting to think that i\'m bound to always be the first guy on the second page of the thread.

I know for sure that in battlefield the adhoc network defined in the MS article is not in use. It exists some implementation of radio ad hoc networks but the Layer 2 processing is assured by UHF radios (like the Raytheon E-PLARS radio). The real innovation is about the Layer 3 processing with ad hoc routing protocol. One of the most popular is AODV.
The adhoc system proposed by M$ since its rely upon a 802.11b compaible radio wave (around 2GHz) shall be range limited (about 100m) & therefore I don't see the application into the Himalaya or amazon, but it seems very interesteing for 2 types of application.
- For business meeting anywhere: when u want to exchange data during a meeting
- For net gaming on the beach
