I've read a lot of books on various security topics, but the one I've found that is comprehensive and quite relevant is "Inside Network Perimeter Security" by Stephen Northcutt, Lenny Zeltser, Scott Winters, et. al
The coverage is not only technical, but also covers important areas in security such as audits. policies, etc....

The Silmarilion takes a bit of effort to read doesn't it? I'd say my favourite books so far would be:
Lord of the Rings
Dune (the first book)
C - The Complete Reference
Pretty much any Wrox book (they're amazing)
And the book that got me into programming, C for Dummies Vols. I and II
