    pop-ups and cookies

alright- a few weeks ago i visited a website (no it wasn't free porn ) which somehow planted something in my computer so now, i not only have fifty million pop-ups whenever i acess the internet; every time i log on i have this wierd little search bar pop up at the bottom of the screen, and every fifth visit or so my toobars change from having Google as my search bar to this other bar that apparetnly got installed when i visited this site. no biggie, but it's getting amazingly annoying. i've deleted my cookies and my history but no luck. does anyone know how i can get all this to go away??

Adaware and spy bot search and destroy should do the trick.

Oh to help you prevent this from happening again...
it could help you to install packaged firewall... such as norton internet security . It has some protection from this. (works for me, although I don't use this as my only mode of protection. A multi layerd approach is much better.)

Another thing would to be to check out and learn to use proxomitron.

There are tons of other things you can do too.. but this should be a good start for ya.

Xupiter Toolbar Removal Instructions and Help
    What is Xupiter?

Xupiter Toolbar browser plug-in tools that gets installed on your computer through a popup ad or driveby installation that installs many times without your permission. It can also be loaded as an Active X control in Internet Explorer.

Once installed on your computer, Xupiter proceeds to display pop-up and pop-under ads as you surf the net. It also adds the Xupiter Toolbar to your browser, adds links to your favorites, and changes your home page. Xupiter then proceeds to track your browsing habits and report back to a server.

Just curious how you figured he had that Xupiter Toolbar installed? I saw no mention of it.

Just a hunch....the behaviour described reminded me of an article I had read on Xupiter and its interaction with browser toolbars.

BTW, there are some other handy removal tools at the link I posted that are product specific (ie comet cursor, xupiter, etc.)

    Heh, I figured as much.

I have had these stupid toolbars spread across my network once... only once...

HotBar proves to be a quick one to spread. One person installs it... uses some of its smileys and emotions in an email and you've got the second user clicking on the link to install it on theirs. So the chain goes.

I got behind a full day of work cause I had to remove this focker from 1/3rd of the PCs on my network.... I was pissed. Though... adaware and spybot do the trick 98% of the time.
