    it appears that poland is set to dance

    with some of the recent developments Poland is busy currying favor here and there and acting the part of a growing influence in Europe. do you think they will affect policy in a material way in the next one to five years?

    Very much so, together with the other 10 countries who are set to join the EU in 2004.
    Generally, the new countries do not share the view that France and Germany should dictate how the EU is run. In particular, they regard good relations with both the US & Russia as very important.

    Which of course is why there is so much controversy over the new EU constitution, which amongst other things will decide what issues are decided by a majority vote, and which can be vetoed by one country.

    And that is why countries like Poland are a bit pissed off, because they are not involved in the process. Potentially Poland is going to vote in a referendum to join the EU without knowing what the rules will be

    True. I hope that the rebalancing of political clout can happen this time without another war.
