    Web Site Idea

I have an idea for a web site. But I don't know how all of that kind of crap works.
Do you have to get some sort of copyright on a web site?

How would I protect myself in that if I discussed this with someone they wouldn't go behind me and do it on their own?

If I hire a company to build and maintain it, what makes it mine so I profit from it, if they are doing all the work?

If I tried to do it myself what type of equipment, licensing, etc... would I need to host a web site?

This site would require a database that would grow in size exponentially, what would be the best product to handle this?

I thought maybe getting a friend or two that do web programing to just help me go ahead and build it and just buy some web space and do it all ourselves, or is that a bad idea?

I don't expect anyone to actually answer all of these questions , I,m just looking for some suggestions, mainly links to somewhere that would explain some of this type of stuff. I've searched the internet over and found plenty of stuff about software and programing languages etc...but can't find quite info that I need.

Any suggestions, comments, or links are appreciated.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn\'t be called research, now would it?

When you hire someone to do the site, they design it for you and maintain it for your... regardless how much money you make on it.. they are skill bound by the contract laid out when you contracted them.

IF you plan on making money from your site... don't do it yourself unless you are a competent deisgner who knows what he's doing...

i would suggest you get some cheap linux web space.. use php and sql for the databse and good luck.

As for others.. i design sites so i do it all myself... so i dunno what works for you.. if you have friends who are willing to help you then go with that.

Now that is just bullshit. The best way to learn Web Development is by using some raw text editor. NOT Frontpage. Macromedia Flash MX should only be required when you create flash movies. You don't really need other Macromedia tools. Most of them are useless, IMO.

    Anyway, to answer your questions:
    A) Do you have to get some sort of copyright on a web site?
When you _create_ a website, it is automaticly copyrighted for 50 years by you, untill you change it. Once you change it, the 50 years start all over. If you can prove you are the original author of anything, you can copyright it. Same goes for articles, stories, created images, programs etc etc etc. Please note, that is the case in Holland, and may be different where you at.

    B) How would I protect myself in that if I discussed this with someone they wouldn't go behind me and do it on their own?
You can't. Whenever you got a good idea, only discuss it with people who's comments actually matter. Only discuss things related to the answers you're looking for, instead of explaining your entire plan. The chances are pretty small when you know what to tell, and to who.

    C) If I tried to do it myself what type of equipment, licensing, etc... would I need to host a web site?
This depends on how you are going to create the site. If you are just going to use HTML/CSS, then all you need is a text editor and a browser. If you are going for server-side web development, then you'll at least need some hosting package, some where. And, it has to support your chosen server-side programming language. (I.E. php, asp, etc) Some sort of SQL database would also be usefull. (MySQL is the best, IMO). As far as I know, no licensing is required to be a web developer. (If you're planning to work for some company, this may not be the case, but most web developers end up freelancing anyway)

    D) This site would require a database that would grow in size exponentially, what would be the best product to handle this?
PHP using a MySQL database is the most easiest way to go for dynamic websites.

    E) I thought maybe getting a friend or two that do web programing to just help me go ahead and build it and just buy some web space and do it all ourselves, or is that a bad idea?
This is the BEST idea to learn more about web development. Just get coding, and when you dont understand something, look it up on the internet. Also, try to start with something not that revolutionary so you can ask anyone for feedback on what you are doing, from as much perspectives as possible. Ask the designer, that kid over there, the old guy next door, your mother and even your little 6y old sister. Ask whoever is a even a little part of your target audiance. Ask what they think about this, that, and that thingie on the bottom of the page. Get feedback.

    Hope this helped.
    Bleh.
