Thread: Window Popups in Xp

    Window Popups in Xp

I am using Windows XP and I occassionaly get a pop-up spam message out of nowhere. Even when I restart my computer, I still get it eventually. It appears at random times, sometimes it might take a day to get it, other times maybe 45 minutes. I am using AdWare and AdWare doesn't pick up anything unusual. How can I go about getting rid of this thing and preventing more of them from coming back? The title of the window shows up as "Messenger Service", though no messengers are running.

I am going to take a stab at this...

    Right Click My Computer
    Select Manage
    Expand Servies and Applications
    Highlight Services
    Find "Messenger"
    Right click and Stop
Also, set it to manual so it will not start again

    Humbly,

Personally, I use 'POW' from AnalogX. http://www.analogx.com/welcome.htm
It is small, easy to use, and non-intrusive. I have tried several other supressors, but they either intruded on my system, or attempted to decide for me, what I should see.
    It is also free.

Just so you know moxnix you are talking about browser based pop-ups and DigitalManiac is talking about Windows Messenger Server Pop-ups.

Just type services.msc into the command prompt, browse down to messenger and disable it.

Those gray boxes suck. This was the easiest way that I found to get rid of them. That function was originally included in Messenger so that admins could warn people on their network of impending shutdowns for mainainence, etc. My mom got so many pop-ups for penis-enlargement that she got rid of her internet access. (She's old, and no she doesn't visit porn sites )

    Good luck

    I'm sorry HTRegz.
I assumed from what he said:

The title of the window shows up as "Messenger Service", though no messengers are running.
And the fact, that a popup window that is prevelent on M$N and is named "Messenger Service", while the M$N messengers are named "Windows Messenger" and " MSN Messenger", that he was asking about how to stop a persistant popup.
That small program helped me so I passed it on.
