Try rebooting and then running scandisk... if that doesn't work...post and I'll try to think of another solution.

Check for any antivirus programs, ram cleaners, anything that's open... kill as many processes as you can so that there's nothing writing to disk because everytime something does, scandisk has to restart. There is a reason they recommend you close all running programs when you run it. Chances are there's something still running if it's still restarting, in which case, boot up in safe mode... if they left that in ME, I never actually used the OS long enough, it came on my pc and I hated it so much after one day that I just upgraded to 2k.

WinME does not play well with scandisk. I had it approx. two years and it never did a complete run. btw, WinME is probably the worst of all the windows OSs, so your best bet would be to by another windows (XP does fairly well) or *NIX. If you're intent on keeping WinME, I wish you good luck and hope you have a better experience than I did.
Preliminary operational tests were inconclusive (the dang thing blew up)

Just another idea: download a third party scan disk program, maybe it will help.

I used Norton disk doctor once and everytime it would scan the disk it couldn't have anything using the hard drive. It was strange to. If I closed a windows, minused a windows it would restart. I couldn't do anything with the computer untill it was done.

[EDIT]Also I would take everyone elses advice and get a different OS. Windows ME really sucks[/EDIT]

Why you dont use Norton Utilities, its better than Windows Scan Disk. Even i'm using Windows XP right now, but i'm still using Norton Utilities... Compare to others third party utilities program, i'm prefer Norton Utilities... most of my friends use it.

    Hope you'll find the SOLUTION....

Try booting Windows in Safe mode (press F8 (?) repeatedly whilst the PC boots, and select safe mode from the list of options). Then try running scandisk.
    Virtually guaranteed to work ....
