LONDON (Reuters) - The Labour Party has often been criticised for trying to manipulate and control the daily news agenda.

But on Monday they took their eye off the ball as hackers attacked the party's official website, putting up a picture of U.S. President George W. Bush carrying his dog, with Prime Minister Tony Blair's head superimposed on it.

Blair was heavily criticised during the recent Iraq conflict for supporting Bush in his bid to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and was regularly depicted as Bush's poodle by the tabloids.

A Labour Party spokesman said the image was removed quickly and that they would be looking into improving security.

"Political websites are often targets for mischief makers," he added.
