    Hey, file issue here...

    Hello, long time no see.

It's been a while no doubt, but when it comes to questions 'bout comps I find this the place to go. I and a friend have an argument and our opinions are:

Mine: You can not save files in XP with the exact same name.
His: You can, somehow, do just that.

Now, from you expert guy's, whos right, and why.

    Thx Pman.

The answer is your both right you cant save files with the exact same name in the same folder but you can save files in different folders with the exact same file name

Hi cytex, thx for a swift answer...

Hm, I knew that, didn't clarify the problem enough. He wants to be able to save files (ie mpg, avi) with the same name, due to a huge download of 'em, in the same file now that he got a comp with enough hd space. He say's it can be done in AcDsee with pic's and that it should be possible in XP with other files aswell. I do not agree...

He states also that he heard of a proggie that handle the filenames in a way so he can name 200 of 'em the same way and save them in the same folder...I do not believe this...

    LOL,

Is this the riddle of the Spynx?

In unix, you can have the same file name but only if you change the case of at least one character. In Windoze, filenames are not case sensitive so you can't have: FILE.TXT and File.txt in the same directory.

He states also that he heard of a proggie that handle the filenames in a way so he can name 200 of 'em the same way and save them in the same folder...
Think about this for a second. Even if this was possible, how would you determine the contents of each file if they have the same name?

    Hope this helps.

Honestly i have never heard of a program that can do this (and i cant see how it would) if any one out there knows the name of this program that can do this will you post it here .

Unless it compressing the programs like winzip and saving them all under 1 filename while its downloading this would be a cool prog .

Well, I have heard in some back corners of OS discussions, that some programs have the ability to look at the date and time created, modified, file size, etc... and use this information to make a guess as to which file your refering to.

As for XP itself, as others have said, you cannot have the same file type and name, in the same folder, at the same time.

    cheers,

    Hey XTC...

Well I don't quit understand that either, but he says that he's got a lot of cd's with alot of filmsequences and stuff downloaded from the net and he has got a lot of em...On each and everyone of these cd's he's got folders with films and pic's and he want, for some reason, take all of these files and put them in only one folder on the harddrive...???

And then the problem occurs, he has got a lot of files with the same name and he doesn't wanna spend time renaming them... (but he can spend time on finding out that it is no way of doin it differently)

As I said, I don' understand it either
