For the best of both worlds, network a linux computer to your win machine.
I sit here at the windows box, open a PUTTY session to the linux box, run all
those neat commands, nmap, whatever. A shell account on your own network!
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

I've been using nmapwin on 2k/xp without problems. Also windump and ethereal on 2k/xp. And even ettercap on xp. All without any problems. I use winpcap 2.3.

My 2 cents
I have also had a few BSODs with WinpCap on my XP box, but not very often. It is stable enough. On Win2KPro, though, I never had a problem.
